DATANot crash-tested
The BMW XM is a high-performance plug-in hybrid SUV sitting at the very top of BMW's M lineup, aimed squarely at buyers who want supercar-level power wrapped in a large, luxury utility body. It occupies a unique and polarizing niche, competing with the likes of the Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne Turbo rather than mainstream family SUVs. Its audience is performance-focused, affluent, and willing to pay a premium for exclusivity.
The 2024 BMW Xm has not been crash-tested by NHTSA, so it carries no Safety Index. Its safety record here is built from 5 recalls and 7 owner complaints on file, giving it a light recall and complaint burden.
- shoppers who want the full federal safety picture in one place
Reviewers generally describe the XM as a bold, divisive machine that delivers genuinely explosive performance and a cabin loaded with premium materials and technology. Most acknowledge its polarizing exterior design and note that the driving experience leans toward drama over everyday refinement. Value is rarely cited as a strength given the steep price of entry, but those drawn to its exclusivity tend to find the experience fitting of its positioning.
