What a recall means
A recall is issued when a vehicle or piece of equipment has a safety defect or fails to meet a federal safety standard. The manufacturer must fix the problem free of charge. A park outside or do not drive recall is the most serious kind, usually a fire risk, and means exactly what it says until the repair is done.
How to check your car
MotorCaliber shows recall history for each model year. To confirm whether your specific vehicle has an open, unrepaired recall, enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. That check is authoritative and free.
Recall, complaint, or investigation?
A recall is a confirmed defect the maker must fix. A complaint is an unverified report from an owner. An investigation is NHTSA looking into a possible problem that has not yet become a recall. We show all three so you see the full picture.
