ABOUT THE SUBARU SOLTERRA

The Subaru Solterra is a battery-electric compact SUV that slots directly into one of the most competitive segments in the American market. Built on a shared platform with the Toyota bZ4X, it targets environmentally conscious buyers who want Subaru's all-wheel-drive credibility in a zero-emissions package. It is positioned as a practical, family-friendly crossover with an emphasis on capability and, increasingly, safety credentials.

VERDICT

Despite a strong crash-test showing, the 2023 Subaru Solterra carries a park-outside or stop-driving recall, so read the recall section first. Both frontal and side crash protection reached the full 5 stars. It has 4 recalls on record, reflected in the score.

WHO IT IS FOR
  • new and teen drivers who want standard crash-avoidance tech
  • urban drivers exposed to side-impact risk
WHAT REVIEWERS SAY

Reviewers generally find the Solterra to be a competent and composed electric crossover with a smooth, planted ride and confident all-wheel-drive behavior in mixed conditions. Interior materials and infotainment responsiveness draw some criticism for falling behind segment leaders, but overall refinement and driving comfort are considered adequate for the class. Value perceptions vary depending on available incentives.
