NHTSA // CRASH-TESTED
2024 Toyota bZ4X
Federal crash-test performance, recalls, and complaints, scored into one NHTSA Safety Index.
The Toyota bZ4X is a dedicated battery-electric compact SUV, Toyota's first ground-up BEV built on the e-TNGA platform and aimed squarely at tech-forward family buyers who want mainstream SUV practicality without a combustion engine. Competing against the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volkswagen ID.4, the bZ4X targets drivers making their first leap into full electrification without sacrificing everyday usability.
The 2024 Toyota bZ4X earns an NHTSA Safety Index of 91 out of 100, an exceptional result driven by its federal crash-test stars and its recall record. Both frontal and side crash protection reached the full 5 stars. It has 3 recalls on record, reflected in the score.
- new and teen drivers who want standard crash-avoidance tech
- urban drivers exposed to side-impact risk
Reviewers generally praise the bZ4X for its composed, refined driving character and the reassurance of Toyota's engineering reputation behind a first-generation EV. Most note that the cabin is well-built and the ride quality is smooth, though some reviewers flag that range and charging speed lag behind key rivals, making it better suited to predictable daily driving than long-haul road trips.
