VERDICT

The 2020 Ram 5500 has not been evaluated by NHTSA for crashworthiness, leaving it without an overall safety rating or any subcategory star ratings. This means our computed Safety Index for the vehicle is unavailable. Its safety profile is therefore shaped by its recall and complaint history alone. The federal record shows a Moderate burden band for both recalls and complaints. Owners have filed eight complaints, some citing crashes, fires, and injuries. NHTSA has also documented nine recall campaigns for the 2020 Ram 5500, addressing issues across the brake, fuel, engine, wheel, and visibility systems. The absence of crash-test data precludes any assessment of its collision performance.

The 2020 Ram 5500 was not crash-tested by NHTSA, carries a Moderate recall and complaint burden band, and is associated with nine recall campaigns according to NHTSA federal safety data.

ANALYSISHow safe is the 2020 Ram 5500?

The 2020 Ram 5500's recall record presents a complex safety profile, marked by multiple campaigns addressing critical systems. Notably, a brake hose recall, also affecting the 2019 model year, points to a dimensional defect potentially compromising stopping performance. This issue gains further context from owner complaints, where brake-related allegations feature prominently. A separate recall for wheel studs and lug nuts spans an extended production period from 2012 to 2021, suggesting a broader manufacturing concern. Additionally, recalls for the diesel fuel pump and engine lubrication systems raise powertrain safety questions, especially pertinent for a cab chassis vehicle often engaged in commercial or heavy-duty applications. The absence of crash-test data for this specific model year, or any adjacent years within the available dataset, means an independent Safety Index cannot be computed.

NHTSA // RECALLSDoes the 2020 Ram 5500 have any recalls?
