Now in its second generation across our 2019-2025 coverage window, the Leaf competes in the growing battery-electric segment as one of the longest-running mainstream EVs on the American market.
The 2022 Nissan Leaf earns an NHTSA Safety Index of 83 out of 100, an strong result driven by its federal crash-test stars and its recall record. It has 4 recalls on record, reflected in the score.
- new and teen drivers who want standard crash-avoidance tech
- urban drivers exposed to side-impact risk
Reviewers generally regard the Leaf as a practical, approachable entry point into electric vehicle ownership, praising its straightforward controls and comfortable ride quality for city and suburban driving. Many note that interior materials and overall refinement trail newer EV competitors, and driving dynamics are described as calm rather than engaging. Value for the price point is frequently highlighted as a key strength.
